Your body wood is an important wood. You want it to be solid but also not too heavy. Otherwise you will never want to play it no matter how good it looks. Cherry, birch and maple are some of the more popular woods. Also, if you are staining your guitar, it is important to think of how you will stain it because you will want nice wood that will match well with the body wood selected. So here are a few good sites to get neck wood from (disclaimer: I have not bought wood from all of these sites, they just look like good places with good deals to me).
- Warmoth.com
- a little bit of everything, lots of premade bodies - A&M Wood Specialty
- some pretty good lumber - Northridgehardwoods.com
- body blanks (cheaper than A&M)
- swamp ash from $53 - Exotic-woods.com
- little bit of everything (except necks)
- pretty cheap body blanks - Exoticwoods.com
- a little bit of everything - Gilmerwood.com
