The wood selected for this instrument must be a hardwood. The type of wood has little effect on a solid body instrument however the neck wood selected will change the acoustical properties of the guitar. But even that difference is not really significant in an electric guitar so your selection of wood should be based on the visual appeal of the wood and its grain.
You can buy your wood from local lumber yards or online from specialty lumber yards, just remember that online you can’t see and feel the wood before you buy. Also don’t forget that
a specialty lumberyard will charge you more, so if you can find it local. There are also shops that have precut guitar pieces (i.e. necks, bodies, body blanks, fret boards, etc.). A few of these webpages you will find on the pages for each part.
Now the most important thing to remember when purchasing your lumber is to be sure that the wood is close grained, with no heartwood, no knots, and no cracks or checks. To check for things toy can’t see tap the wood on the floor and listen for a clunky sound, if you hear it it’s a bad nut so go test the next one, and good luck hunting!
